Originally a resort-farming community that attracted affluent visitors who enjoyed the mild climate, mountain setting and possibly the mineral springs in the hills,
Saratoga today is a peaceful, rustic haven for many professionals seeking a serene lifestyle away from the fast-paced world of Silicon Valley.
Located at the foothills of the Santa Cruz Mountains in Santa Clara County, Saratoga enjoys a
Mediterranean-like climate, typical of coastal northern California, with year-round mild
temperatures. The city is 26 miles east of the Pacific Coast, ten miles southwest of San Jose and fifty miles south of San Francisco. With a population of 31,000,
Saratoga residents value the quiet and repose, grace and beauty which have continually characterized this area, and work to maintain this standard of
living.
This uncommon tranquility combined with a great climate, high school rankings, low crime, a charming old town, attractive homes, and a beautiful setting make living in Saratoga a
unique and unparalleled experience.
Housing
A variety of residential housing styles can be found in Saratoga today, such as sprawling California ranch and turn-of-the-century two-story homes, homes in the hills which overlook the Santa Clara Valley, as well as many grand estate residences. The streets are clean and homes are very well-maintained (many with custom landscaping). City codes restrict repairing cars in the driveway or street, allowing junk to accumulate in yards, or leaving cars parked on public street for more than three days.
A lovely town, the attraction to Saratoga not only lies in the beauty of its homes, but in the continuous effort to preserve the old town as well as the new.
Just under 11,000 residential units were counted in 2000, almost all homes being single-family detached houses. These homes range from 3 bedroom residences to those exceeding 5 or more, most new homes being built on a larger scale. In general, the four-bedroom homes are upscale houses built along enticing tract designs. Custom homes, many opulent, can be found west of city hall, around
Villa MontaIvo, and in the hills off of Big Basin Way.
Schools
Saratoga
is served by six school districts, among which the most popular are Saratoga Elementary and the Los Gatos-Saratoga High School
District. The overall ranking for Saratoga High and the Saratoga elementary schools are in the high
90's ( among the top scores in the state of California). Saratoga High
is also known for scoring in the top five high schools in California
almost every year, for its scores on the math SAT. There are three private
schools located in or near the town: Harker, St. Andrew's, Sacred Heart.
Services and Transportation
Commuters will find that Saratoga is tied into the Santa Clara County freeway network through access to
State Highways 9 and 17, which links the city with Freeways 280, 101 and
85. The city also borders, or is close to, the job centers of Cupertino, Sunnyvale, San Jose and Santa Clara. Airports include
San Jose International and San Francisco International, and
Amtrak, Caltrain (to downtown San Francisco or San Jose), Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (local bus) and
Greyhound Bus service is available.
Recreation
Recreation, cultural, and artistic programs and activities are bountiful in Saratoga. To begin with,
City Hall runs recreation programs for kids and adults, and there are about
nine parks which furnish basketball courts, children's playgrounds, climbing equipment, picnic tables and barbecue, open turf area, soccer fields, baseball diamonds, practice fields, tennis courts, and a par fitness
course. Concerts and art exhibits are hosted at Villa Montalvo (a mansion that was turned into an artists' residence and art museum) and there are
jazz and pop concerts at the Mountain Winery. Saratoga is home to
Hakone Gardens which were created by a gardener who worked for the Emperor of Japan. A
Shakespeare festival, community theater, local town band, first-class restaurants in the downtown, and golf course and country club on the west side are also available here. Just west, over the hills, lies the
redwood country of Santa Cruz County, and in the middle of town sits
West Valley, a community college, which is a cornucopia of inexpensive facilities and activities, all open to local residents. West Valley also has a library, theater, gym and workout rooms, track and playing fields, plus many classes on arts, literature, computers and business subjects.
